School and Demonstration Project - Campo
Grande, MS, Brasil
In October 2000 an area of 8500sq. m. was purchased on the outskirts of the
city of Campo Grande, MS. The aim of this project is to construct a school
dedicated to permaculture and associated subjects.
Part of the site is largely clear of major vegetation, while approximately
one third of the area contains a reasonably intact example of the Cerrado
vegetation native to this area. This area will be protected, expanded and
enriched with other native species not currently present.
At present the main activities on the site include establishment of pioneer
and cover crop species (pidgeon pea, crotalaria, mimosa..) throughout the
cleared areas, and the planting of some local fruit species (caju, castanha,
babaçu, baru) adjacent to the native area.
The plan is to build a school complex through practical, hands-on workshops
that will demonstrate a variety of construction methods, such as cob,
strawbale, sand bags and pisé. A small house constructed from fertiliser bags
filled with soil has been almost completed. The next part of the
building phase involves construction of a house for a caretaker, from recycled
tyres, aluminium cans and paper mache.
